NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Winter weather is on its way to Hampton Roads and VDOT told 13News Now they are making preparations to keep drivers safe.

Crews have been testing equipment and conducting dry runs recently, but they have been preparing since October, officials said.

VDOT also said their goal is to have all state-maintained roads passable within 48 hours of the storm.

While the department has $210 million set aside for winter weather as well as 2,500 crew members on staff, VDOT is $3 million under budget compared to last year's state-wide funding.

Hampton Roads is down $700,000 in comparison to last year.

VDOT Hampton Roads said they have 469 pieces of equipment standing ready for snow and ice removal, including dump trucks, plows, front-end loaders, motor graders and spreaders.

Materials currently on hand include:

  • 24,000 tons of salt
  • 14,000 tons of sand
  • 168,000 gallons of salt brine

VDOT says they replenish these supplies as they're used throughout the winter.
