Shamrock Marathon Weekend comes to an end at the Oceanfront

The annual three-day event begins Friday at noon, with the festivities culminating with the Shamrock Marathon and Half Marathon on Sunday morning.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- The annual Yuengling Shamrock Marathon Weekend has come to an end at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, with more than 7,000 runners and walkers crossing the finish line Sunday morning.

The races kicked off on Saturday with the 8K and kids' Operation Smile Shamrock Final Mile run.

Saturday's TowneBank Shamrock 8K also served as the USA Track & Field (USATF) Masters 8 km Championships. Harrison Toney, 24, of Harrisonburg, Virginia, broke the tape for the men in 25:09. Two masters runners rounded out the top three men: 41-year-old David Angell of Blue Ridge, Virginia, (25:39) and 40-year-old Giovanni Pipia of Kennesaw, Georgia (25:45).

For the women, it was a close finish in the TowneBank Shamrock 8K. Lindsay Carrick, 25, of Emerald Isle, North Carolina, finished first in 29:18. Kerri Dalton, 22 (Harrisonburg, Virginia), crossed the finish line just behind Carrick in 29:23.

Rachel Northup, 42 (Richmond, VA), placed third overall and won the women’s division of the USATF Masters 8 km Championships in 30:15.

Then on Sunday, Justin King of Indian Trail, North Carolina, won the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon with a time of 2:33:40.

The winner of the marathon on the women's side was Tami Ritchie of Clermont, Florida, who broke the tape at 3:02:28.

For the Anthem Shamrock Half Marathon, Gregory Mariano of Alexandria, Virginia, placed first in 1:08:56 while Nicole Dimercurio won the women’s division with a time of 1:13:15.

After crossing the finish line, participants headed to a post-race party on the beach complete with Yuengling beer, Murphy’s Irish stew, and live music.

In all, almost 20,000 participants enjoyed the 2018 Yuengling Shamrock Marathon Weekend. More information and complete results can be found at shamrockmarathon.com.
