NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Just days before what would be her 100th birthday, the City of Newport News is celebrating the First Lady of Song, Ella Fitzgerald.
The Newport News native and legendary jazz singer's legacy is being honored this weekend with the 19th annual Ella Fitzgerald Music Festival at the (where else?) the Ella Fitzgerald Theater in the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center.

- April 21, 2017 – CNU Jazz Ensemble and Rhonda Ross (Diana Ross and Berry Gordy's daughter)
- April 22, 2017 – Good Shot Judy and Lizz Wright

Fitzgerald, who passed away in 1996, was one of the most popular female jazz singers of all time, who won 13 Grammy awards and sold more than 40 million albums in her lifetime. Her music remains popular to this day, including a couple of appearances on the soundtrack of the popular Fallout video game series.
