VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- A Police K-9 will be receiving a potentially life-saving gift thanks to a 10-year-old girl who raised donations for her birthday instead of asking for presents.

Alexis Mattingly was able to raise enough money to buy a Kevlar vest for the police department's K-9 unit.

In total, she raised around $3,200. One K-9 vest costs around $2,500.

"I did two bake and craft sales and Facebook," she explained.

The Virginia Beach Police Foundation was presented with a check for the vest a presentation on Wednesday.

Sergeant Chris Tull with Virginia Beach police said he was amazed a 10-year-old could be so generous.

"These are more than dogs. They're our partners and our buddies. Getting them protected is like protecting us," he said.

With the help of Alexis and a few other donors, all 15 dogs that need vests have one.

The vest Alexis bought is still being customized and when it's done, her name will be on it.
