VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- A Cox High School Junior was named Miss Teen Virginia USA 2017, Sunday.

Madison "Maddy" Walker won the title at the pageant held at Virginia Tech's Moss Center in Blacksburg. She competed against girls from different regions from around the state. All of the girls were between the ages of 14-19-years-old.

"As a first time pageant contestant, it was surreal to even make the top 12 contestants." said Walker

The pageant consisted of a Charity Night, preliminary competition, and a final competition.

Walker chose to compete in the pageant not only for the scholarship opportunities, but also to use the Miss Teen Virginia platform to spread awareness for the organization Tiny Superheroes.

Tiny Superheroes provides superhero capes to children with cancer, congenital heart defects, Epilepsy, undiagnosed syndromes, rare diseases, autism, and more.

"I'm so thankful to have the opportunity to bring more awareness to Tiny Superheroes," said Walker.

Walker has seen first-hand the struggles children with disabilities face, her brother Bryan has Down Syndrome.

"Without Bryan, I wouldn't have won the title, made the top five, or even the top 12. I wouldn't be the person I am today; he inspires me." said Walker.
