NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- 13News Now is proud to present our special program, the 32nd Annual Holiday Salute.

Mike Gooding, Kristina Zverjako, Philip Townsend, Ashley Smith and Lucy Bustamante take a look at the sacrifices and dedication of military members, families, veterans and the Hampton Roads volunteer organization and industries which support them.

Mike concentrates on the thousands of men and women at Newport News Shipbuilding who construct the ships which take the fight to the enemy -- specifically on the successes of the Virginia Class submarine program, and on a very special scholarship program launched by the president of the shipyard's parent company.

Kristina takes us on a journey of honoring and remembering those who have gone before: Gold Star families will forever have an empty seat at the holiday dinner table. Yet, they want nothing more than for the world to remember what their fallen loved one did for our country.

Philip has a story that only comes along every 250 years: the 250th anniversary of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He talks to leaders and to workers whose families have worked there for generations, keeping the fleet strong.

Ashley takes us on a musical trip with some holiday favorites provided by the United States Fleet Forces Band. She'll show us the skill and dedication the musicians bring to the job of sharing a little seasonal joy to the Hampton Roads community.

Finally, Lucy takes a special look at the on-going effort to make sure that our nation's heroes at Arlington National Cemetery are never forgotten at the holidays. Campaigns conducted by local volunteers ensure that all deceased veterans have wreaths placed upon their graves. The amazing effort of one local woman is truly inspiring.

Holiday Salute will debut on Saturday, December 23 at 7 p.m. and is scheduled to re-broadcast on:

Monday, December 25 at 4:30 a.m. and 6 a.m.

Holiday Salute first aired in 1986. The show has spanned seminal events in the late-20th and early-21st centuries, including the Cold War, Operation Desert Storm, the Bosnia and Kosovo wars, 9/11, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and now: Operation Inherent Resolve.
