NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Get to know the name Leroy Bailey. Many people have on social media. Thousands have been following his feat -- walking around America -- he's literally walking the perimeter of the U.S. That's 11,000 miles!

He's doing it to raise awareness about a problem he cares about deeply -- homeless veterans.

"There's NO veteran that should be out there on the streets," said Rick Bozart, one of Leroy's friends who wrote a song about his journey. "Our country should not let that happen."

Leroy left Virginia Beach at the end of June, 2014. Since then, he walked to Florida. He went down and around the Sunshine State. He crossed the gulf Coast states. He went around Texas then up the California coast to Washington state. He's traveled the northern border with Canada, looped Maine and walked down the east coast to Salisbury, Maryland -- where he was last night. Now, he's on one of the final legs of his long journey -- down Route 13 in Maryland -- on his way to Virginia. Rick and some buddies will pick him up and drive him across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel to Shore Drive in Virginia Beach, where he will continue walking to PIN Ministries on 19th Street near the Oceanfront. He hopes to reunite with his wife, family, and friends at around noon.

He hopes to write a book about his walk one day to raise money to benefit homeless veterans.
