VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- Plaza Middle School is lending a helping hand to families of students impacted by Hurricane Matthew.

After learning 28 families were impacted by the storm, the school's Parent Teacher Association started raising money through donations. Kim Henson, PTA president, tells 13News Now more than $9,000 has been collected.

Tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. , families will be able to purchase what they need. The event will take place at the Walmart on Phoenix Drive in Virginia Beach.

Each family will receive $300, according to Henson. She said money that is leftover will be given to families to use for the holidays.

Henson says that with a $25 donation, people can be entered into a drawing. Prizes include Washington Redskins vs Carolina Panthers tickets and an NFL helmet.

If you're interested in donating, you can contact the parent teacher organization at 757-816-2686. The drawing is Monday.
