CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) -- Many people like a good scare on Halloween as long as the screams are all in good fun. The Chesapeake Sheriff's Office wants to make sure there are no surprises in one Halloween staple: candy.

"There's people that are out there trying to hurt our kids," said Lieutenant David Rosado with the Chesapeake Sheriff's Office. He says it's important for parents to check candy.

"When you get home, sort everything out. Things that are securely packaged keep. Things that aren't, toss," he said.

If you get fruit, he says you should toss it out as well.

It's also a good idea to feed your kid before they go out to make sure they don't pick at the candy. Parents should make sure children's costumes aren't a hazard.

"You don't want them to be tripping on their costumes, also good footwear because they are going to be walking and they want to be comfortable," said Rosado.

Reflective tape on the back of costumes makes kids more visible. In addition, make sure your kid can actually see out of their mask.
