Chesapeake therapy dog, Piper, running for national award

A local pit bull named Piper is in the running for a national award.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) -- A local pit bull named Piper is in the running for a national award.

She's in the "Therapy Dog" category for the "American Humane Hero Dog Awards," one of seven categories.

Her owner, Kelli Adams, said she registered Piper as a therapy dog years ago. She knew Piper loved people since she was a puppy.

Piper has been in Adam's care since she was 3 months old.

"She's just a very people pleasing, friendly dog," said Adams. "She's at Chesapeake Regional. She's been there a couple times. We actually did a nursing home visit right out here."

For Piper and Adams, not everyone warms up from the start.

"A lot of it is like...is that a pit bull? Is that a pit bull? But, to me, she's just a dog," said Adams.

Together, their mission is to help people, and other pit bulls break that stereotype about the breed.

"I fight it every single day to show the goodness of dogs like her because it upsets me because she's a good dog," Adams said.
