NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- PETA is planning to protest the opening night of 'UniverSoul Circus' in Norfolk.

UniverSoul Circus will perform a total of 21 new shows in Norfolk from July 26- August 6 at Military Circle Mall.

The circus group is in it's 24th season. The shows will feature clowns, motor-cross bikes, as well as several animals such as elephants, zebras and camels.

PETA has announced a protest of the circus on it's opening night, Wednesday, July 26. The protest will happen at the intersection of Granby and E. Main streets in Norfolk at noon.

Two PETA supporters are expected to be painted up as zebras, while urging families not to buy tickets to the performances.

"UniverSoul Circus denies zebras, elephants, and other animals everything that's natural and important to them—just for a few fleeting minutes of human amusement," says PETA Foundation Associate Director of Captive Animal Law Enforcement Rachel Mathews.
