NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Police are investigating a shooting that left a man and a child injured Wednesday night.
The shooting happened in the 200 block of Nicholson Street just before 9:15 p.m.
When crews arrived they found a 38-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound and a 7-year-old girl that had been shot in the leg.
The child's father tells 13News Now that his daughter, Janayah Jones, was hit by a stray bullet. She was taken to CHKD, released and is now recovering at home.
"I was in the house and the kids were outside riding bikes. I just heard gunshots so I ran outside to find my kids. I heard my daughter screaming," Tony Jones said.
Jones said Janayah managed to run to a neighbor's house for help.
"Some guy came around the corner holding her. She said something was wrong with her leg, so I grabbed her and brought her in the house. I checked her and seen a gunshot wound in her leg," he said.
Jones told 13News Now Janayah believed someone was trying to kill her.
"It's really scary seeing a 7-year-old go through that. I told her, 'they wasn't trying to kill you. You were just in the wrong place at the wrong time,'" Jones said.
The injured man was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
No suspect information has been released at this time.
