NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Friends of Norfolk Animal Care Center is hosting the biggest dog and beer party in town!

For the 5th consecutive year, Dogtoberfest is taking place Sunday, October 22 from 1 to 5 p.m. at O'Connor Brewing Company.

The Ghent Brewing Company is opening up its beer garden and parking lot to all friendly dogs and their owners.

Dogtoberfest raises funds for Norfolk's largest animal shelter, last year over $8,000 was raised.

“Dog enthusiasts from all over Hampton Roads come out every year for this. They love the live music, the craft beer and dressing up their fuzzy friends. It's just about the most fun you can have on a Sunday afternoon,” says Friends Chair Anne Odell.

For $30 at the door, patrons will get a ticket to a variety of goodies, like a Dogtoberfest beer glass, a craft beer tasting from O'Conner's and lunch at one of the food trucks in service.

A special performance is planned by Goliath, a local canine who is possibly the smartest dog in Hampton Roads, according to his owner. The 4-year-old rottweiler can retrieve hundreds of different items on command and will be demonstrating his skills.

Dog owners will get a chance to show off their own canines in a costume contest as well as a “Tricks for Treats” contest during the event. The winner of the pup pageant will reign as "Toptober-Dog" for a full year and will be featured as the “cover dog” for Dogtoberfest 2018.
