VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- The City of Virginia Beach is searching for a contractor to renovate the Cape Henry Lighthouse.
The project will stabilize the top of the dune against erosion to protect the soft sandstone at the base of the lighthouse. A pedestrian plaza will be installed with interpretive sign panels as well as a better view of the coast.
The city also hopes to build a new stairway at the entrance of the lighthouse.
About $845,000 has been given from four federal transportation grants which cover 80 percent of the project's funding.
Preservation Virginia and the City of Virginia Beach will provide matching funds.
Bids will be accepted for the 1792 lighthouse starting in January.
