NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- As people gear up for winter sports, Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD) is reminding them of the importance of wearing a helmet to avoid head injuries.

13News Now sat down with Dr. Charles Dillard, a pediatric physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist at CHKD, to discuss the benefits of wearing a helmet.

According to the specialists at CHKD, head injuries are more common when kids are active in outdoor activities such as riding bikes.

They said helmets are extremely important for some sports and activities. Wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of serious brain injury from a bike crash by up to 88%.

To make sure the helmet does its job, you should make sure the helmet fits properly. CHKD also warns against allowing kids to wear bike helmets on playgrounds.
