PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- Coast Guard crews medevaced a 69-year-old woman from Ocracoke Island Tuesday morning.
The woman was experiencing stroke-like symptoms while at Ocracoke Health Center.
The Hyde County Sheriff's Department contacted watchstanders in the 5th District Command Center for help transporting the woman to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Crews boarded an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter at Air Station Elizabeth City just before 11:30 a.m. They arrived at Ocracoke Island Airport 40 minutes later. The woman was hoisted into the helicopter and flown to the hospital.
"The crew performed with excellence today," said Lt. Tyler Monez, aircraft commander of the Jayhawk helicopter crew. "Although we faced inclement weather, our training and risk management enabled us to reach the patient quickly and deliver her to higher care."
The woman's condition is unknown at this time.
