NORFOLK -- Law enforcement, firefighters and EMS personnel were honored Friday in the 2nd annual Valor Awards.

The Valor Awards recognize extraordinary acts of courage and resourcefulness in the line of duty.

The gold Medal of Valor award was given to Officer Kenneth White with the Portsmouth Police Dept., who shot and killed a man who'd just robbed a credit union and was pointing a gun at him.

A silver Medal of Valor award was presented to two Portsmouth police officers--Raymond Anderson and Brad Doston. They saved the lives of a couple attacked by a man with a knife in their home on Twin Pine Roads on March 17, 2013.

A silver Medal of Valor award also went to Investigator Randall Gillespie of the Norfolk Police Dept., who subdued a gunman during an undercover drug buy in September 2013. Authorities say he prevented a firefight between members of the police department and the suspect.

Bronze Medal of Valor awards were given out to several officers.

Officer Neal Robertson with the Norfolk Police Dept. was honored for his efforts to combat crime in the West Little Creek Road and Glenwood Park areas.

Officers Robert Aaron, Curtis Allison and Christopher Baughman disarmed a suicidal inside a Norfolk home in November 2013.

MPO Christopher Foxwell, Officer Douglas Peyer and MPO David Shoenback with the Virginia Beach Police Dept. who saved a man who ran into his burning house to try to find a baby trapped in the home on August 15, 2013.

Other awards presented Friday were for investigative work and lifesaving actions.

Lieutenant W. Scott Humphrey of the Virginia Beach Police Department, received a $1,000 scholarship to further his education as this year's scholarship recipient.

13News Now anchor Vanessa Coria emceed the event at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott in downtown Norfolk.

The awards are sponsored by the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce and TowneBank.
