Feds: Former Hampton police officer helped distribute drugs, tampered with witness

Deangelo Freeman, once recognized with a Medal of Valor by Hampton Police Division, is facing several federal charges.

HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- A former Hampton police officer is accused conspiring to distribute drugs in and outing an FBI confidential informant to those charged along with him.

Federal prosecutors said police in Idaho arrested Deangelo Freeman, 30, on Wednesday.

Investigators said Freeman worked with the following people to move drugs throughout Hampton Roads:

  • Alex Jermaine Burnett, AKA “Da Boss” AKA “Styles"
  • Charles McMillan, AKA “Cee Mack
  • Charles Bailey, Jr.
  • Mario Deyon Barrett, AKA “Rio”
  • Jordan Davis
  • Stanley Freeman, AKA “Pacman”

The group is accused of gun, cocaine, and heroin trafficking. Investigators said the ring leader of the operation was Alex Burnett, a member of the Bloods gang, who was co-owner of 9Round gym which was located in Peninsula Town Center in Hampton.

Federal investigators said Freeman also tampered with a witness by providing the name of that person -- a confidential informant -- to his accused co-conspirators.

Freeman was a patrol officer with the Hampton Police Division (HPD) whom the division recognized with a Medal of Valor.

HPD presented the award to Freeman for his work in an incident in April 2012.

Police said Freeman was the first officer to arrive on Ravenscroft Lane where a woman was staggering outside of a home, stabbed, shot, and burned.

Carla Williams told Freeman that her husband, Travis, killed her 1-year-old daughter and Williams' grandmother.

Williams died at the hospital. Her husband died after police shot him. The shooting was deemed justified.

Freeman is charged with conspiring to possess with intent to distribute narcotics, distribution of narcotics, and tampering with a witness. He faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison and a maximum of life in prison if convicted.

A spokesman for the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia said the The Hampton Police Division has cooperated fully with the investigation and provided significant assistance to investigators.

The Hampton Police Division provided 13News Now with a statement about the arrest of Freeman which included the length of time he was with HPD:

The Hampton Police Division is committed to working collaboratively with our federal law enforcement partners. As such the Division has officers assigned to several local federal task forces in the Hampton Roads area. HPD works in partnership with the FBI and has a detective assigned to the Safe Streets Task Force. This partnership allows for an immediate and consistent collaborative investigations involving the Hampton Police Division and the FBI. Deangelo Freeman separated from city employment on 11/09/2017. Mr. Freeman was hired with the Hampton Police Division as a patrolman on 09/30/2010. Any further comments regarding Mr. Freeman would be referred to the United States Attorney’s Office, Eastern District.
