KINSTON, N.C. (AP) - Police in North Carolina say a man was shot in an encounter with officers on patrol.

News outlets report that a release from Kinston police says officers were conducting directed patrols at the request of a community and encountered 44-year-old Anthony Hicks on Saturday, around 9:30 p.m. Police say gunshots were fired and Hicks was struck.

Hicks was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. No officers were injured.

It's unclear who fired. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating.
