NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Newport News Police are investigating a deadly shooting that happened Monday night.

According to officials, the call came in around 10:15 p.m. at the 12800 block of Tahiska Lane. Responding officers found a man lying on the ground with apparent gunshot wounds.

Police have identified the victim as 23-year-old Lawson C. Breedlove.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was a frightening scene for one Newport News man and his grandmother.

Devin Walker came home Monday night to police and crime scene tape everywhere. Inside, his grandmother described what she heard just minutes earlier.

“She had been woken up to 5 to 6 shots,” Walker says. “We looked out back to see a dead body.”

It was on this same street last September where several people woke up to their car windows shot out. The entire neighborhood still on edge.

“We've had a couple of shootings in the past here but now it's starting to get more frequent,” Walker says.

This is the 23rd homicide in Newport News this year. There were 31 in 2016. 26 in 2015.

Walker says it's frightening, especially so close to their home.

“I don't know if we plan on moving in the future but it seems this place is a cause for more crime,” Walker says. “This place isn't as safe as it used to be 9 to 10 years ago.”

The victim has not been identified at this time, and there is no suspect information.
