NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- A Heritage High School student is facing charges after police say he brought a loaded handgun to school.

A security guard contacted Newport News Police shortly after noon on Tuesday, saying that officers needed to come to the school immediately. Arriving officers learned school officials had overheard rumors of a gun on campus, and spoke with several students.

School security approached several students, one of whom agreed to talk and lifted up his shirt, revealing the gun. The 17-year-old then handed over the weapon without incident.

Police determined the gun had been stolen in Hampton. The teen was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm on school property, and possession of a stolen firearm.

The student was taken to juvenile detention.
