NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- EVMS graduates who are currently serving in the military were sworn in as officers Thursday at a ceremony aboard the USS Wisconsin.
Each year, EVMS produces doctors, physician assistants, and other health care professionals that also serve in the military.
“It’s a great way to be able to demonstrate our commitment to supporting the armed services through the medical school,” said Richard Homan, President and Provost of EVMS.
Lt. Jessica Zimmerman says she always knew she wanted to be in the medical field. Now, she is a doctor who will soon treat military men and women at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth after graduation.
“I just want to have the opportunity to serve those who serve us,” said Zimmerman.
Thursday, Zimmerman and other graduates were pinned and sworn in as military officers.
Homan says the relationship EVMS has with the military is crucial to the Hampton Roads community. The main EVMS commencement ceremony is Saturday.
