NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters offers a spine program for all ages suffering from all types of spine deformities and conditions.

Nearly two-thirds of the program's cases involve scoliosis.

Scoliosis is a deformity of the backbone where it has a side-to-side curve shapes like a C or S.

The curve can happen to the right, left or both of a child, and in different sections of the spine.

In most cases, the cause of scoliosis is not known. The child could be born with it or they can develop it later in life.

Possible causes include nervous system problems, injury, different leg lengths, inherited conditions that tend to run in families or tumors.

Parents who might suspect their child has scoliosis should seek advice from their pediatrician immediately.

CHKD offers a scoliosis program designed to provide treatment and correction for all levels of AIS. They have personalized treatment plans using the most current techniques.

Their focus is working closely with families to reach a desired outcome to remove physical discomfort, improve symmetrical physical appearance and emotional wellbeing.

CHKD also hopes to prevent future physical complications.
