YORK COUNTY, Va. (WVEC) -- The Peninsula Health District is alerting residents of a kitten that tested positive for rabies near Valor Court.

The rabid animal was described as a 10-12 week old black kitten.

The kitten was part of a litter of feral kittens and their mother. They were found near Queens Lake Middle School.

If you have had any contact with this kitten, including a bite, scratch, saliva in or near an open wound, eyes, nose, or mouth, contact the Health Department at (757) 603-4277. People can also be exposed to the rabies virus through contact with a pet who has touched the rabid animal.

Anyone trying to contact the Health Department after hours, should call (757) 890-3601.

Rabies is a fatal, but preventable, disease. The Health District would like to remind everyone to vaccinate their pets, report all exposures to animals, and to enjoy wildlife from a distance.
