VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- AAA Tidewater Virginia is offering child seat safety checks on Sept. 23 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event is just one way the community can get involved during National Child Passenger Safety Week which started on Sept. 17.

Nationally-certified child passenger safety technicians and instructors will check the fit and security of your child's seat for free.

The event is open to the public.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that nearly three out of four child safety seats are not used properly.

Below are some safety practices recommended by AAA for your child's safety in the car:

  • Always read the car seat manufacturer's instructions and vehicle owner's manual.
  • Keep children rear-facing as long as possible until they reach the upper weight or height limit of their rear-facing convertible seat.
  • For all children under age 13, the back seat is the safest place.

The event will take place at 5366 Virginia Beach Blvd. For more information, visit
