CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) -- A driver is recovering after a police chase from Chesapeake to Norfolk ended with a car hitting a tree.

Kelly Elliott with Chesapeake Police tells 13News Now the incident began shortly after 1 p.m. when an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop at the intersection of Bainbridge Boulevard and Poindexter Street for a traffic violation.

The driver of the car, which had been reported stolen, refused to stop. Officers pursued the car into Norfolk where it hit a tree at the intersection of Joe Austin Drive and Herbert Collins Way, according to police.

The man driving the car was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. There were no other people inside the vehicle.

Police say charges are pending against the driver.
