Hampton Roads officials launch first-of-its-kind site for water access

Finding safe and activity-filled water access spots around Hampton Roads just became a lot easier.

CHESAPEAKE, Va (WVEC) – Finding safe and activity-filled water access spots around Hampton Roads just became a lot easier.

The Hampton Roads Planning District has rolled out its newest interactive website called FishSwimPlay.

It’s meant to encourage people visiting waterways in Hampton Roads, and better prepare visitors for what each location offers.

"I think living here in Hampton Roads, we see the water all of the time and sometimes I think we just take it for granted," said Benjamin McFarlane, Senior Regional Planner. “It was the first time we've ever done anything like this."

The effort, in conjunction with other Non-governmental organizations, has been in the works for about two years.

“Whether it's James City County or Hampton, Isle of Wight or Virginia Beach, it’s all in one place,” McFarlane said. "Just looking at the sheer number of sites on a map, I think, in general, is pretty surprising."

Users can also find canoe spots, boat ramps and even trails near specific addresses. A filter option allows people to find different activities as well.

“For example, you can type in your work address to see if there's anything within a mile," McFarlane said.

The analysis, promotional material and website cost about $40,000, paid for by a grant and taxpayer money from different localities.

The official launch of the website is Thursday, but users can access it on a phone, tablet or computer right now.
