NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) – A local woman is making her mark on the Hampton Roads community.
Once a week, 96-year-old Hazel Pearsall volunteers at Norfolk International Airport.
"I didn't intend to volunteer this long. Well I didn't know I would still be alive," Pearsall explained.
Hazel Pearsall is an inspiration for many.
At 96, her wheels are still turning. For the past 15 years, Pearsall has volunteered at the airport once a week for just a few hours. Her job is to greet travelers and helps get them from point A to point B.
"Sometimes you stand here and say hello and sometimes people hardly speak to you. It's just one of those things. You still smile and say hello."
If she gets tired, she’s allowed to take a break. She said she used to work Friday afternoons, but it got to be too much.
"I sit down for five minutes, because people will come up to you even though you are sitting down," Pearsall explained.
After her husband passed away years ago, she promised herself she would keep busy. Each week, she has a packed schedule. She volunteers with several organization and still has dinner with her friends once a week. Pearsall said at 96 she couldn't be any happier.
She said, "I’m not sure I have a favorite. I like the people I work with but I like meeting the people too."
Pearsall said her goal is to continue staying healthy so she can continue volunteering until she is at least 100 years old
