FRIDAY FLAVOR: Pirate's Cove in Chesapeake serves up culinary treasure

Finding good seafood isn't hard in Hampton Roads. But one family-run restaurant in Chesapeake has been a real culinary treasure for almost two decades.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Finding good seafood isn't hard in Hampton Roads. But one family-run restaurant in Chesapeake has been a real culinary treasure for almost two decades.

Pirate's Cove is not only a family-run business, but there are multiple generations of other families working there, too.

"It's been a staple here, and it will always be a staple," John Tillery said. "It's just a good environment, the food is fresh and we work hard to put out a good product."

John Tillery took over the restaurant a few years back and works with his two daughters who help run the business.

"Husbands and wives that work here, father and daughters, from mothers, sons and daughters," Tillery said. "The fun part about my job is that I walk around and ask people how their dinner was and I get compliments all day long."

Some advice to visitors: come hungry because the portions are "huge."

"Tuesday night is steamed shrimp," Tillery said. "Wednesday we have shrimp and grits and crab legs."

Pirate's Cove is located at 109 Gainsborough Square in Chesapeake.
