CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) -- Officials tell us the Gilmerton Bridge reopened Wednesday evening, days after the vertical lift bridge became stuck in its open position.

According to the Department of Public Works, the bridge became stuck in the open position Tuesday morning after it opened for a regular lift.

A small counterweight apparently fell off of its track and bent the pulley that holds the cable. A bridge operator was able to stop it from opening completely by catching the counterweight.

The Gilmerton Bridge, a vertical lift bridge, is stuck in a partially raised position.

On Wednesday, crews made temporary repairs to the damaged auxiliary weight and began testing the bridge.

Until a more permanent repair can be made, the bridge will require manual openings. This means that bridge lifts will take longer, as the bridge will lift slower than usual.

The schedule for the bridge has been modified in the mean time.wo bridge lifts have been scheduled for midnight Thursday, and 5 a.m. Thursday, June 30. Following those two lifts, the bridge will lift only at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily, until further notice.

Motorists should expect the lifts to last longer than usual. Final repairs will call for bridge closures in the future, but those closures will be scheduled and advertised prior to the closure.

Final repairs will be made once replacement parts have been made and delivered.
