New cameras coming to Chesapeake school buses

Chesapeake's fleet of public school buses will be getting new cameras installed that aim to make your child's ride safer.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — School leaders in Chesapeake want to make your children's bus stops a little safer.

BusPatrol is partnering with Chesapeake Public Schools to put stop-arm cameras on more than 500 buses. When the program finishes up, all buses will not only have the stop-arm cameras, but cameras all over the vehicles.

"We'll also have interior cameras and exterior cameras that will see behind, to the side, and a camera on the inside and looking out," said Director of Student Transportation David Benson. "And it's virtually protecting the bus on all side, and making bus stops safer for all students."

There will be 14 cameras in total on each school bus. Chesapeake Public Schools says the new cameras will come at no charge to the district.

The hope is that by installing top-notch safety equipment will ensure students get to and from school easily and most importantly, safely.
