HAMPTON, Va (WVEC) -- The recent arrest in the homicide of a 70-year-old Hampton man has stunned neighbors of the victim.

On Saturday, loved ones of Donald Burrell gathered at his home.

Burrell was shot to death multiple times earlier this month, according to Hampton Police.

Friday, police arrested the victim’s 30-year-old son, Joel Burrell, and charged him with murder.

“I can’t imagine what that poor man thought,” said Carrie Newman, Burrell’s next door neighbor. “Especially with it being his own son.”

Other neighbors remembered the elder Burrell as a kind and loving man, often lending a helping hand when needed.

“My scooter handle bar was broken and I came over to Mr. Donald’s house to fix it,” said Randy Tyler.

“He was quite the character and we’d laugh and joke a lot,” said Newman.

Those he considered family said he was most of all, a proud father.

“There were two things in Joel’s corner, God and his father,” said Robbin Forte-Cameron, a close family friend. “His father loved him and [Donald] would do anything for that young man.”

Forte-Cameron said the family is trying to find peace.

“I know he’s in the arms of God. Very tragic death, but I know what the outcome is, so that’s the only thing that holds me together on his behalf.”
