HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- Health officials say the owner of a dog that scratched someone on New Year's Day has come forward, after health officials made a public plea to identify the animal.

The Hampton Health Department says the dog was at the Ridgway Bark Park Jan. 1 with a man in his 50s and a boy around 10 years old.

Because the dog's saliva made contact with the scratch, health officials said the victim would have to undergo rabies shots if the dog wasn't located.

Fortunately, the owner heard about the news report and contacted animal control. With the dog located, there is now no longer a need for the victim to undergo rabies treatment.
