HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- With the grocery store wars heating up, the City of Hampton is about to welcome its first ALDI supermarket.
ALDI will have its ribbon-cutting grand opening on Thursday, July 13 at 7:25 a.m. at 1980 Saville Row. The first 100 shoppers will receive a "golden ticket" containing ALDI gift cards.
It's the first ALDI to be located in Hampton. Other ALDI grocery stores can be found in Newport News, Williamsburg, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach.
The Germany-based grocery chain has been aggressively expanding in the United States, where it now has more than 1,600 stores across the country.
German rival Lidl just dove into the U.S. market, with its first locations in the country opening earlier this summer in Hampton and Virginia Beach. A Chesapeake Lidl will also open its doors on Thursday.
