NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Authorities say a passenger died after a car struck a tree and caught fire in Newport News over the weekend.
Virginia State Police were called just after 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 17 to investigate a car fire on I-64.
Investigators found out that a 2011 Jeep Cherokee was traveling in the eastbound lanes when the driver attempted to take the Oyster Point exit, ran off the road into the gore area and hit a tree.
Flames began to consume the car, which killed a passenger in the car.
The male driver was taken to Riverside Hospital. The extent of his injuries are unknown at this time.
The passenger has yet to be identified and police say alcohol was a factor in the crash.
No other details were released at this time, but police are investigating the accident.
