NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Investigators determined that a child playing with a lighter started a house fire that displaced a family of three Saturday.

Newport News firefighters got to the 900 block of Russell Ct. in Briarfield at 9:15 p.m. The fire was under control within 30 minutes. The flames damaged a bedroom and a hallway. There was smoke damage throughout the house.

The American Red Cross helped the two adults and the child who lived in the home.

The Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue responded to help the Newport News Fire Department.
