NEWPORT NEWS -- Five people were shot outside a restaurant in Newport News Tuesday night and investigators were questioning one person about what happened.

Police responded to a call about a fight between two groups of people and shots fired at Deja Vu Restaurant and Lounge at 6128 Jefferson Ave., not far from Mercury Blvd., around 8:20 p.m.

According to Newport News police spokesman Lou Thurston, officers didn't find any victims there but saw several vehicles in the parking lot with shattered windows

Shortly after that, three people who'd been shot showed up at the hospital for treatment; the fourth victim, who was found at nearby Crittenden Middle School, was transported to the hospital. Later in the night, the fifth person walked into the VA Hospital in Hampton. That person was transferred to another hospital.

Thurston says the victims, ages 28, 32, 42, 45, and 59, were together.

One man said he was across the street when the shooting started. He estimates he heard at least 40 gunshots and said, when it was over, you could smell gunpowder hanging in the air.

The victims should recover, police added.

Deja Vu Restaurant and Lounge is attached to Wynnwood Plaza Hotel. Its Website says it's a lounge and Soul Food Restaurant that offers great food, live entertainment, music, sports and more and is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.
