NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Police have arrested a suspect in connection to the shooting of a Newport News woman, police said.

A spokesperson for the police department told 13News Now officers found a 37-year-old woman with a non-life threatening gunshot wound in the 2200 block of Jefferson Avenue just after 6 a.m. on New Year's Day.

A suspect, later identified as 45-year-old Jerome Hillian, was detained at the scene. Officers were told a dispute happened before the shooting.

Hillian was charged with malicious wounding, possession of a firearm by a felon, reckless handling of a firearm, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony (first offense).
