NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- A man died Thursday after he was hit by a car on Warwick Boulevard in Newport News.

Newport News Police say emergency communications received a call around 10:30 p.m. reporting a vehicle and pedestrian accident near the intersection of Denbigh Boulevard and Warwick Boulevard.

After investigating, authorities found that the male victim was crossing Warwick Boulevard from a shopping center and stepped off the median into the roadway. The driver of the car closest to the man was able to brake before hitting him. The car in the second lane was not able to brake and struck the victim.

The man was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries, police say.

The driver stayed on the scene and cooperated with authorities. No charges will be filed at this time.
