NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- A man is seriously injured after being shot during a carjacking on Sunday morning.
Police say the shooting happened around 4:16 a.m. in the 500 block of Bailey Court. Upon arrival, officers found a 27-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds to the arm and buttocks.
He was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The victim told police he was inside of his car when two unknown men approached him. One of the suspects displayed a gun and made the victim get out of the car and lay on the ground right before he was shot.
A neighbor said he saw the whole thing unfold from his apartment. "I'm like, 'Oh my God, you've got to be kidding me.'"
He says he saw a man in a gray hoodie walk up to the driver. Once the victim was shot, the watchful neighbor called police.
"I said, 'Get police officers to Denbigh Village apartments. Some guy just got carjacked and he's lying in the parking lot, crawling across the parking lot.'"
Both suspects got in the car and fled the scene.
Other neighbors said this crime makes them scared for their safety.
Kevin Smith just moved into the apartment complex. He said, “You know, an Army veteran such as myself, I just moved here to get some peace and quiet so after hearing that I’m like, oh man what next? I just want to be in a safe environment.”
A short time later, officers found the victim's car in the 100 block of Jenness Lane on fire. It was burned to the frame.
The Fire Marshal's Office responded to the blaze. The incident remains under investigation.
The eyewitness tells us one suspect was heavier set, wearing reds sweatpants and a blue top. The second suspect, who had the gun, is skinnier and about 5'2", and looked to be in his late teens early 20’s.
