NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Police are investigating after a man was shot during a home invasion in Newport News.

Officers were called to the 1300 block of Moyer Road around 2:27 a.m. Friday.

Police say the incident began when a 54-year-old man woke up hearing noises in his home. He went to investigate and confronted one intruder.

A struggle began with a second suspect. During the altercation, the man exchanged gunfire with one of the suspects.

The homeowner was shot in his left leg. Both male suspects then fled the scene.

The victim's injuries are said to be non-life threatening. Police say it is unclear if anything was taken.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident. 13NewsNow viewer Tercell Byrd said at least 13 police cars lined his street. "To happen so close to home, it's crazy," he said.
