NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- The assistant police chief in Newport News will take the reins until a new police chief is chosen.

On Thursday, City Manager Cindy Rohlf named Michael Grinstead to serve as interim chief until a permanent replacement is found for Chief Richard Myers.

Grinstead has served the Newport News police department for 35 years, and also served in the Naval Reserve during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Myers announced earlier this month that he would be leaving on September 1 for a new job with the Major Cities Chiefs Association, which is a national police chiefs organization.
