Newport News police apprehend fugitive at Days Inn, ending tactical situation

Newport News Police apprehended 23-year-old Brian Fayne on Sunday, ending an hours-long tactical situation, police said.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va., (WVEC) -- Newport News Police apprehended a 23-year-old man Sunday, ending an hours-long tactical situation, PIO Brandon Maynard said.

Brian Fayne, 23, was taken into custody without further incident, Maynard said.

Fayne had several felony and misdemeanor warrants out of various jurisdictions, he said.

At 9:27 a.m. Newport News Communications received a call of a fugitive at the Days Inn hotel at 11829 Fishing Point Drive.

Upon arrival, it was reported that Fayne was inside a hotel room. He refused to exit the room.

Fayne's girlfriend, a 22-year-old woman, and their child was also inside the hotel room, and Maynard said that's a game changer.

"When you have a child that's mixed in with a situation like this it changes the whole game. Safety is the number one priority and making sure that it only the child-but the female and male get out safely," said Maynard.

After several attempts to call them out of the room, a tactical situation was initiated around 1:25 p.m., Maynard said.

"We go in there and we get the job done. You know just because you see the swat team or tag team- it's not all about busting down doors," said Maynard. Fayne surrendered just before 3:30, and no one was injured. Maynard says it's teamwork that kept everyone safe.

"That's why they eventually came out. The skill of our tactical units and our negotiators is a big part of the success today of him turning himself in," said Maynard.
