Virginia State Police said the driver of a pick-up truck hit a trooper's car from behind on March 13, 2018 as the trooper stopped to check on someone who had spun out in an SUV on Victory Boulevard.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Virginia State Police charged a driver after a pick-up truck slammed into the back of a trooper's car Tuesday morning.

Sgt. Michelle Anaya said Trooper J. Napier stopped to help a woman who was involved in a wreck on the Victory Boulevard overpass of Interstate 64 around 6 a.m.

Napier pulled up behind the woman whose SUV spun out on the icy roadway and ended up on the grassy median. Napier's blue and hazard lights were on as he and the woman stood outside of the cruiser and SUV.

Anaya said Kenneth Smoker, who was driving a pick-up truck, hit Napier's car and pushed it into the SUV.

Police charged Smoker with Reckless Driving/Failure to Maintain Control.
