NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Two toddlers were turned over to the custody of Child Protective Services after police say a woman ditched them in a store while being confronted about shoplifting.

Officers arrived at the Macy's on Jefferson Avenue just after 2:30 p.m. on October 10.

Police say the woman was seen taking clothes into fitting rooms, and exiting without the items. Loss prevention personnel confronted the woman, and found the clothes concealed in her diaper bags.

During the incident, the woman allegedly fled the store, leaving the one-year-old and two-year-old children behind.

The investigation is ongoing.
