NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- A man is in custody following a several-hour standoff with authorities in Newport News.

Officers were first called out to the home in the 900 block of Woodcreek Drive shortly after 5:30 for a report of a man allegedly assaulting his live-in girlfriend.

The woman was able to leave the residence, but the man did not come out. Negotiators tried to get him to leave the residence, but he refused.

A tactical situation was declared at about 8:45 p.m., and SWAT was called out.

Shortly after 10:30, the suspect, identified as 22-year-old Zachary Brtt, was taken into custody without incident.

Police say the man had outstanding warrants out of Chesapeake and Portsmouth. He now also faces charges of strangulation and attempted malicious wounding.
