NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Police are investigating a child neglect case after a two-year-old was found alone on Newport Avenue.

Officers were alerted to the situation just after 10 p.m. on Monday, November 28th.

Investigators say a good Samaritan took care of the child while waiting for officers to arrive. The child was said to be not injured, but did have a wet diaper when officers made contact.

Officers were able to find the father of the child. Investigators say the father was sleeping inside his home, which is not far from where the toddler was found.

The father allegedly told police that this isn't the first time something like this has happened.

Child Protective Services was notified of the incident. Newport News police are continuing their investigation.
