NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Police are looking for a man who they say robbed a taxi cab driver after hailing a ride.

Police responded to the 400 block of Oyster Point Road around 2:45 a.m. They spoke with a 44-year-old taxi driver who said he was robbed when he picked up a man on Menchville Road.

13News Now spoke with the cab driver who did not want to be identified.

"Nothing registered in my mind as being dangerous," said the driver. As he started driving, he said the man slid over in the seat quickly.

"He put his arms around my neck and he pressed a weapon, which I couldn't see," said the driver. "It felt sharp and it was hard."

The suspect demanded money from the taxi driver. The driver said his instincts kicked in.

"Whatever he asks for, give it to him and survive. Whatever kind of, you know, material possessions he wants to get from you, give it to him and live."

After the driver handed the money over, the suspect demanded he drive to Warwick Boulevard, where the suspect got out of the car and ran.

The driver was not injured and said he was relieved when the man got out of the car.

"You didn't know...if you were going to be here in the next few seconds or not," he said. "And then to have the relief of the fact that he's gone and you're alive."

Police describe the suspect as a black male, late 20's to early 30's, small afro, 6'0 tall, 200 lbs, wearing a dark green shirt, black pants and a baseball cap.
