Norfolk store owner at wits' end after 2nd car crashes into business in 6 months

A Norfolk store owner is asking for help after cars continue to slam into his business.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- A Norfolk store owner is at his wits' end. Larry Friedman doesn't allow food, drinks or cars inside his store, M&G Sales.

But he's having a hard time keeping cars out.

For the second time in less than six months, a car slammed into his family-owned military surplus store on Tuesday.

"It's interesting. I was waiting on a police officer actually, he had called about an item, and I was showing it to him. And we heard the crash," he said.

A yellow Corvette slammed into the building's storage door area. But it wasn't the driver's fault; Norfolk Police said another driver, who was going westbound on the three-lane 27th Street, made an improper lane change. That vehicle sideswiped the yellow car and forced it into the store.

Motorists in the center lane legally have to stay straight, but Friedman said drivers sometimes instead turn left. He asked the city for help and in December, Public Works installed better street and lane signage.

Beyond that, a spokesperson tells us they plan on improving lane markings and installing an additional Granby sign.

Friedman wants the city to put in steel poles, but a city spokesperson said that would be a "last resort."

"I don't want to wait until it's too late," Friedman replied. "Protect the citizens."
