NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Norfolk's aging Scope Arena opened 46 years ago, and city leaders say it's time for a major expansion.
But the arena's iconic design means builders can't go up, or out, so they have to dig down!
Our partners at The Virginian-Pilot obtained a preliminary study that recommends lowering the arena floor by 4-and-a-half feet. That could add around 4,000 seats.
Back in May, city leaders told us, this renovation is going to come down to cost.
"We're just looking at it and hopefully through our study and analysis, we'll have something to bring to the community of the potential of what Scope can generate," Mayor Kenneth Alexander said at the time.
There's no word yet from the city on if this project is going to move forward. If they do, the study says work could take nearly two years.
